EDITING & COST PLANNING

How much does academic editing cost? Compare scope and quotes

A price per page tells you little about what academic editing includes. The agreed checks, the condition of your own draft and a clear deliverable matter. This guide helps you send enquiries that can be meaningfully compared. Every euro amount shown is an explicitly fictional calculation, rather than a Skriptovia price list, a market price or a binding quote.

1. Ask for a total price for a defined scope

A meaningful comparison needs the file to be reviewed, a defined task and a deadline. “How much is a term paper?” leaves it unclear whether you mean proofreading, language editing, structural comments or something else. Clarify the service before comparing individual rates.

Skriptovia agrees the scope, deadline and total price before a binding order. This guide cannot determine a price for your draft. A fictional calculation can show how a quote might be structured, but it cannot replace checking your actual requirements.

2. Separate proofreading, language and additional checks

Before commissioning work, check what your university permits for this particular assignment. The linked university resources explain writing practices or their own rules. They do not grant universal permission for external editing. Authorship and subject decisions remain your responsibility.

Points to clarify for comparable enquiries
AreaWhat to agreeNot automatically included
ProofreadingSpelling, grammar, punctuation and typing errors.A structural review or confirmation of subject claims.
Language editingClarity, style and consistent terminology within the agreed scope.New arguments, new literature or rewriting the content.
Structural feedbackComments on organisation, transitions and the line of reasoning.Independently reorganising or rewriting your paper.
Sources and presentationWhich lists, citation rules or source checks are explicitly covered.Checking every source, a subject review or a plagiarism guarantee.

3. Describe the factors that change the task

Ask for named tasks rather than “premium editing”. Similar service names may cover different work. A short sample and your three main questions help define the task before you agree to it.

  • Text volume: word or character count, pages and explicitly included footnotes, tables, appendices and reference lists.
  • Progress: a complete draft, selected chapters or a version that still needs substantial restructuring.
  • Review levels: proofreading, language editing, structural comments or separately agreed presentation checks.
  • Deliverable: an annotated file, clearly marked changes and any agreed summary.
  • Timing: requested delivery and time for your own review of the feedback. Do not assume that a shorter deadline is available or automatically incurs a fee.
  • Follow-up: a single delivery or a precisely defined round of questions. Later versions are not automatically reviewed.

4. Establish what counts as a page or unit

A formatted document page is not a fixed quantity of text: type size, spacing and tables change its length. A page-based quote should explain its counting method. If it uses a “standard page”, establish the agreed character count and whether spaces are included; do not assume one universal definition.

For a word rate, ask whether footnotes and reference lists count. For an hourly or fixed quote, ask about the scope, limit and additional requests. Then compare the total including all agreed parts and any explicitly stated additional charges.

5. Read two explicitly fictional calculations

These freely chosen study examples come from the same central collection as the service pages. The assumed “page” unit exists only for this calculation. They show why two different scopes cannot be compared using their page rates alone.

Fictional, non-binding calculations — not a price list or quotes
ExampleAssumed calculationFictional totalAssumed scope
Language editing10 text pages × €6.00€60.00Your own draft: language and clarity with visible changes; no additional research.
Editing with structural feedback10 text pages × €9.00€90.00Language review and comments on the outline and transitions; you check subject-specific claims yourself.

6. Use a concrete brief instead of a vague price enquiry

Example A — your own draft, language focus: “I am sending my current draft and assignment brief. Please quote for the language and clarity checks permitted by my university. Mark unclear claims as questions. I will add literature and arguments myself. Please specify the counting unit, included parts, total price, delivery date and file format.”

Example B — additional feedback on organisation: “Alongside the language review, I want comments on the outline, transitions and line of reasoning. Please separate that feedback from the language scope. I will write new chapters and arguments myself. Is a round of questions included, and how would a later revised version be handled?”

Add the actual volume, desired deadline, relevant formatting rules and passages you are particularly unsure about. Remove personal information that the reviewer does not need.

7. Check the quote before deciding

Keep the agreed scope and your original draft. When feedback arrives, make a conscious decision about every change that affects meaning. Editing provides agreed support for a text you wrote; it does not promise a particular assessment result.

  • Does it refer to the exact file or version you submitted?
  • Are the counting unit and included parts clear?
  • Are the requested checks and exclusions described?
  • Is the total clear, including any extra charges or additional rounds?
  • Are delivery, file format and follow-up questions clearly agreed?
  • Does the support fit your university’s requirements?
  • Have you allowed enough time to review changes and comments yourself?
